It’s as if software developers these days have become lazy as all hell. Windows 98 is still very solid, as well as Windows XP. Even the older OS Xs are still solid.

My computer only recently stopped doing that. In exchange though, the shut down command doesn’t work and it has to be done physically.

I had this issue for a couple months. It fixed itself after I ran the windows update troubleshooter for the millionth time.

Haha.
Apple is master race.
Better design. Nicer materials
Oh shit my iPhone ran out of battery in 6 minutes again.

I ran into this problem. Do a hard reboot.
Also, a lot of people say that if you upgraded instead of doing a clean install, do a clean install.

You can try this:
Ctrl-Alt-Delete
Start Task Manager
From the File menu in Task Manager, select Run
Run: taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
Do run again, this time just run: explorer.exe
Or just reboot?
Not great to need to do, of course.

SigOther works at a film school, and we have a lot of Apple gear, some of it is free. And it all works. Sure. I’ll have to buy a new Mac Mini in a year or two, but it’s all good.
We don’t have Apple TV, but that’s probably coming. I want to cut the Time Warner cable.

Oh bollocks. Does this mean that my computer will rust while on fire?

Has it been less than 30 days since you “upgraded”? If so, then your old OS should still be on the machine and you can revert to it pretty easily.
If it's past 30 days, then you'll need the product key to revert back.

Both my work machines upgraded to Win10 overnight without asking for permission. Then it forces you to go through an initial setup before you can access anything to revert it back to the old OS.
During the mandatory setup, it asks if you want to enable a whole bunch of nannies and tracking applications, including “Cortana” the personal assistant. They’re all set to be on by default. I went through and disabled or deselected each and every one. Guess what was active, front and center, on the taskbar as soon as it finally finished setting up and loaded the OS? Cortana.
No thanks, Microsoft.
Reverted as soon as it finished booting up and wrote “because fuck you” when it demanded to know why I was reverting.

Buying a Mac every year doesn’t make anything all good except for Apple’s bottom line (becausestonecoldsaidso). It’s a shit marketing scheme. But I understand there are certain markets that use Apple exclusively so you have no choice in the matter.
But knowing all this and still repping it... straight up Stockholm syndrome, yo.
And crappy Time Warner Cable is causing you to want the Apple TV.

Are you on preview builds? Haven’t seen that for months.

If you upgraded to windows 10 this is a known issue from my experiance. I just had my whole IT Department (Devs) upgrade to windows 10 and its a common issue.
I would recommend upgrade to 10 (so you get it for free) and reset the PC to original Windows settings which is built into windows.
Start -> Search for “Reset this PC”-> Click Get started and follow instructions..
You have the options to keep all your files and reset windows which will work just fine. WARNING- This will require you to reinstall all your apps/programs.
Hope this helps

I am not sure - I shall do a post asking Oppo’s advice on how to cut the cable. The answer might be our TIVO, Roku, Apple TV - I just want ideas.
And no - it’s a new computer ever 4-5 years for me - and I use a Vizio smart TV (cheap!) as a monitor. It could be worse.

task manager and run explorer.exe. At least that’s how it is from 7 and down. I don’t upgrade to 10 when it asks me

Everyone always complains about Window’s 10 but I’ve never had any problems with it outside of not working with all my pre 1995 serial devices but that’s a lot to expect from a modern OS.
I also like Mac alright, I own both and they both have their uses. Probably going to sell my Mini pretty soon to buy newer monitors for the PC.
Do you have Windows 10 pro?

I have a MacBook Pro as well as a PC with Windows 10 Home. I built a PC because I wanted to ween myself off of Apple, which I’m not a fan of.
My overall impression of Windows 10 is that it’s a bit unstable and fragile. It’s like ME to 2000 (8.1). Hopefully Windows 11 (or whatever they’re gonna call it) will be better.

Do you keep W10 updated? I got it when it came out last year and have seriously had no issues. 8.1 and 8 were admittedly a little buggy, but I feel like 10 brings back 7's reliability and usability.
It also might have something to do with the fact that you built your own machine. I have an enterprise Dell M4800 workstation that is supposed to be like super stable because of business standards or something as well as a Surface Pro 2, which is Window’s own hardware so it makes sense that it’s optimized/ stable.
OSX kinda limits what I can do. Yeah, Adobe can run off of it just fine but a PC with the same specs will do it better. I do like their design but you can find better design on most PCs if you actually look. A lot of cheap window’s laptops are plastic and shit but once you go into Mac prices for a PC they’re all pretty good.

I have no choice but to keep it updated. That’s actually one of my complaints, that W10 pretty much forces updates no matter what you’re doing on the computer. I usually have animations render through the night while I’m sleeping. On Windows 7 and OSX, I’ve had no issues. On W10, I’d come to my computer in the morning to be greeted by the login screen. After logging in, I’d find an incomplete render.

I know with 10 pro you can block updates, one of the business features. I’m surprised home won’t let you do that.
Honestly they’re should just be one Windows 10 and then Window’s RT for everyone that doesn’t run actual desktop apps, which is a lot of people.
Kinda like how most people can get by driving a subcompact everyday but instead go for a full size or a truck for just going around town.
